Bithumb Mistakenly Distributes $58B in Bitcoin to Users

Bithumb

A logic error during a promotional event led to the accidental distribution of 620,000 Bitcoins.

During a marketing event intended to give away $600 to users, a human error in the ledger system resulted in the distribution of 620,000 Bitcoins (worth roughly $58 billion) instead of the intended Korean Won. While Bithumb restricted accounts within 35 minutes, approximately 1,786 BTC were sold or withdrawn, causing a temporary 17% drop in the global price of Bitcoin. The CEO later admitted to "faulty internal controls" during a parliamentary hearing.
