Ttareungi Bike-Sharing Service Data Breach: 4 Million Users to Receive Compensation

Seoul's Ttareungi bike-sharing service will give a free 30-day pass to about 4 million users affected by the 2024 data breach, which exposed personal information for roughly 4.62 million users, according to city officials. Two teenagers allegedly hacked into the service's server in June 2024, leaking data including account IDs, mobile phone numbers, addresses, dates of birth, gender, and weight. The two suspects were referred to prosecutors in February 2026. Seoul Facilities Corporation finalized which specific types of data were exposed for each individual user after consulting with the National Police Agency and the Personal Information Protection Commission. It began texting affected users on Tuesday, with the notifications specifying which personal information was leaked for each person, explaining how the breach happened, and offering tips to prevent further damage. Roughly 1.2 million messages are going out each day on a rolling basis. Some users — those who've changed phone numbers or opted out of texts — may not receive a notification at all.
