National Election Commission Systems Breached by Kimsuky Group

National Election Commission (NEC)

North Korean hackers successfully infiltrated the NEC network through a vulnerability in the security software.

In May 2023, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) revealed that the National Election Commission had been hacked multiple times by the North Korean "Kimsuky" group. The hackers used "zero-day" vulnerabilities to bypass security and install malware. While the NEC initially claimed no voter data was lost, a forensic audit confirmed that employee credentials and internal administrative files were exfiltrated.
